Canada Denies Legitimacy of Russian-held Ukrainian Elections: Trudeau Condemns ‘Sham’

Canada’s Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, has declared that Canada will not acknowledge the election results recently conducted by Russian authorities in territories of Ukraine currently under occupation. Trudeau vehemently expressed his disapproval of these elections, describing them as nothing more than a “sham”.

He has publicly castigated the elections as a callous attempt by the Russians to give an air of legitimacy to their military conquest, falsely presenting it as an exercise of democracy. Moreover, according to Trudeau, these elections represent a gross violation of international law.

Earlier in the week, local elections commenced in various regions under Russian control, including Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk, and Zaporizhzhia. These elections were implemented in order to establish Russian-infused legislatures. They are set to wrap up by the end of Sunday.

This political maneuver by the Russians has been received with widespread disapproval, not only by Kyiv and the Council of Europe, but also throughout various Western countries. This collective denunciation accentuates the international concern regarding Russia’s activities on Ukrainian territory.
