In a bid to alleviate the intensifying human crisis in Israel and the Gaza Strip, the Canadian government is set to disburse an initial fund of $10 million, as confirmed by an announcement from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau last Thursday. These funds will serve to furnish rudimentary human necessities such as food, water, medical assistance under emergency circumstances, and protection services to those most affected.

The Prime Minister underscored the Canadian government’s unwavering commitment to bringing support to those in dire need, while also continuing to monitor the situation closely in collaboration with global partners. Speaking from Yellowknife, Trudeau emphasized the devastating consequences of the continued conflict between Israel and Hamas, both domestically and abroad.

Trudeau refrained from passing judgement on the United Nations’ admonition accusing Israel of contravening international humanitarian law. He, however, was resolute in his censure of Hamas’ acts of terror against Israel, asserting Israel’s right to self-defend within the confinement of international jurisprudence.

He remarked on record, “Hamas, undoubtedly a terrorist organization, has brazenly taken innocent lives and made an audacious step to invade Israel, capturing hostages in utter disregard of international laws.” Trudeau also pointed out that Hamas “does not speak for the Palestinian people, Arabs, or Muslims.”

Trudeau fervently advocated for all individuals – Israeli or Palestinian – to lead lives of peace, security, and dignity, with full respect for their inherent human rights and further encouraged efforts to safeguard civilians amidst the ravaging conflict.

Ahmed Hussen, Canada’s Minister of International Development, confirmed that the relief fund is in response to solicitations from seasoned and dependable humanitarian associates. It will be dispersed among several bodies such as the Canadian Red Cross, the Palestine Red Crescent Society, and Magen David Adom. The aim is to offer immediate aid to those living in unbearable conditions and to ensure unhindered humanitarian access throughout the region.

The Canadian government had earlier intimated its intent to channel humanitarian aid specifically to Gaza and the West Bank, prompted by the displacement of approximately 264,000 Palestinians within their territory. In addition, the monitoring of funds to prevent their diversion into the hands of Hamas will be ensured through strict diligence and counter-terrorism measures.

Senior Canadian figures have voiced their worries about the worsening humanitarian condition in Gaza, where the Israeli government has ceased the provision of essential supplies including water and power, despite international criticism. The International Committee of the Red Cross has made a pressing appeal for Israeli and Hamas officials to grant neutral humanitarian access to Gaza with a view to delivering vital aid and facilitate communication between hostages and their families.

Regardless of these considerable challenges, Canada is unswerving in its support of peace and protection of civilian lives, with no immediate plans for initiating evacuations for Canadians stranded in Gaza or the West Bank. “We are resilient in our determination to support our allies and partners who aspire for the region’s eventual return to peace,” remarked Trudeau.
