The Canada Border Services Agency has heightened the alert stance of its personnel along the Canada-U.S. border, cautioning them to remain vigilant for a man believed to be responsible for the fatal shootings of a minimum of 18 individuals in the southern region of Maine.

The aforementioned shootings occurred on Wednesday night in Lewiston, approximately 260 kilometres to the southwest of the New Brunswick border.

The suspected assailant has been identified in a police announcement as Robert Card, aged 40. His credentials depict him as a firearms instructor, speculated to be a member of the U.S. Army Reserve and currently affiliated with a training establishment in Saco, Maine.

In the wake of this disclosure, a large-scale manhunt is underway for Card. Concurrently, the inhabitants of southern Maine have been instructed to lock their abodes and stay indoors.

The CBSA has confirmed that it is cooperating with multiple law enforcement agencies both in Canada and the U.S., including but not limited to U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the RCMP. The operative objective of these collective efforts is to safeguard Canada’s borders against any credible threat or unlawful ingress attempts.

The border agency of Canada has relayed its “Armed and Dangerous – Firearms lookout” alert through an internal communication system to all its officers. In addition, the agency has emphasized that entry points located all along the Canada-U.S. border are structurally intact and operational.
