Calgary is preparing to lend a hand as ongoing, catastrophic wildfires persist in British Columbia. A platoon of soldiers stand ready to travel west as part of the unceasing efforts under “Operation Lentus”, the codename for the Canadian Armed Forces’ response to domestic natural disasters.
On Sunday, these armed forces members underwent their final logistical preparations ahead of an early Monday morning departure for British Columbia. Approximately forty soldiers drawn from the local Canadian Brigade Group, headquartered in Calgary, are poised for active deployment.
This marks the battalion’s second dispatch this summer to support the continuous operation. They’ll be joining existing forces on the ground, with thirty of their comrades from the Canadian Armed Forces already posted on site in British Columbia. Their ongoing efforts involve not only frontline firefighting, but also critical evacuation procedures and other necessary operations related to the blaze.
The wildfire has not only ravaged British Columbia, but numerous other areas as well, with hundreds of additional personnel assisting in the dire battle against the roaring flames in the Northwest Territories. The majority of the soldiers deploying from Calgary’s Canadian Brigade Group are part-timers, stepping up from civilian life into a mixture of international and domestic missions as needed. This robust response is a testament to the ever ready and resilient spirit of the Canadian Armed Forces.
