In an act of malicious stratagem, a British IT specialist who had woven a web of trickery around an unsuspecting elderly duo, cruelly silenced their lives with the potent drug, Fentanyl, ironically found himself ensnared in his own devious plot. The infamous Luke D’Wit, aged 34, was sentenced this past Friday to an inexorable minimum of 37 years behind bars, two days subsequent to the conclusion of his trial where he was held culpable for the untimely end of Stephen and Carol Baxter, aged 61 and 64 respectively.
The tranquility of the Baxters’ rustic dwelling in West Mersea, a serene town located a couple of hours drive to the east of London, was last April, shattered by the chilling specter of deceit and murder. Throughout the six-week court proceedings held at the Chelmsford Crown Court, the panel of jurors bore silent witness to a series of cold-blooded maneuvers orchestrated by D’Wit, one of which included forging a fraudulent last testament on his mobile device, assigning himself as director of the unsuspecting couple’s flourishing shower mat business, a mere 24 hours after their demise. Disturbingly, D’Wit bore an eerie sense of inhuman detachment, remotely observing the mortality of his victims after administering them his lethal brew.
Insidiously insinuating himself into the fabric of the aging couple’s lives, D’Wit resorted to an array of deceptive facades throughout 2021 to gain their trust. His repertoire of deceit ranged from masquerading as a medical practitioner from Florida to posing as a fellow sufferer in a fictitious support group for Hashimoto’s thyroid condition, the intimate pain of which Carol Baxter shared.
Presiding Justice of the court, Nicholas Lavender, dubbed D’Wit’s heinous acts as both “cruel and senseless”. In a bid to enforce the gravity of the charges, Lavender pronounced a life sentence on D’Wit with a non-negotiable 37-year parole prohibition. The silence that echoed in the courtroom was broken by the Justice stating his conviction that D’Wit manipulated his father’s medical supplies, extracting the lethal Fentanyl from his prescribed patches.
“You might have been driven by an alarming need to manipulate others,” commented Justice Lavender on D’Wit’s motive. Unraveling the fatal sequence of events that led to the couple’s tragic death, Justice Lavender shed light on how the Baxters were deceived into consume a ‘health drink’ laced with the deadly drugs. After ensuring his victims were unconscious, D’Wit callously monitored their dwindling life signs using a mobile application, smugly withdrawing from the crime scene for a brief period.
