Brazilian Poker Pro Suspended for Cheating at LAPT

In a dismaying turn of events for the professional poker community, a story of dishonesty unfolded during the Latin America Poker Tour (LAPT), casting a shadow over the integrity of the game. Rafael Caiaffa, a Brazilian poker pro, found himself in the center of controversy amid allegations of cheating which have led to his indefinite suspension from the Brazilian Series of Poker (BSOP) tournaments.

The sequence of events that culminated in Caiaffa’s downfall began inconspicuously during a table change in the LAPT Mystery KO event, with a buy-in of five thousand Brazilian reais, or approximately one thousand United States dollars. As players were reassigned, Caiaffa was unwittingly entrusted with an additional starting chip stack from a newly organized table, which was meant for an incoming alternate player.

It was a juncture where an upright decision could have steered the course of events very differently. Rather than declaring the irregularity, Caiaffa opted to surreptitiously deposit the extra 100,000 in chips into his backpack. It was not until later, facing losses and during another table transition, that he slipped the cached chips back into play.

This act of subterfuge did not go unnoticed. Watchful players and scrutinizing cameras caught the deed, promptly reported it to officials, which resulted in Caiaffa’s immediate suspension. Although Caiaffa has an established poker pedigree, with accolades that include a bracelet victory on GGPoker in the recent past, his admission of the infraction further reinforced the decision of the authorities.

During a candid admission to Marcelo Souza of Card Player Brasil, Caiaffa confessed to the misdeed, initially contemplating a return of the chips but ultimately falling victim to a misguided justification of the tournament dealer’s error. Now, with the suspension potentially escalating to a lifetime ban pending deliberation by BSOP officials, Caiaffa must grapple with the repercussions of his actions, which contrast starkly with the illustrious tournament he once commanded.

The backdrop to this disheartening incident is the flourishing BSOP Millions, hosted in São Paulo and sponsored by PokerStars. This event has become a flagship of the Brazilian poker scene, boasting 100 tournaments over 15 action-packed days and an impressive total prize pool of 40 million Brazilian reais. The Main Event alone, with over 2,315 contenders, is a thrilling emblem of the series with a guaranteed 10 million Brazilian real purse, elevating BSOP Millions as a beacon for poker enthusiasts and world-class talent.
