A significant setback has hit the Black Caps at the Cricket World Cup as pivotal player Matt Henry bows out of the tournament owing to a severe right hamstring tear.

Henry’s injury was incurred during a major loss to South Africa in Pune. An MRI scan revealed a grade-two lower tear, necessitating a recovery period spanning two to four weeks.

Filling the void left by Henry would be Kyle Jamieson, whose earlier role in the tournament was as an injury coverage. Jamieson now joins the Black Caps’ 15-man squad as Coach Gary Stead expresses the team’s collective sentiments towards the injured player.

“His absence is a blow for all of us,” remarked Stead, speaking before the anticipated showdown with Pakistan on Saturday. “Matt has been an integral part of our one-day team for a considerable period, and it’s particularly disappointing to witness his exit at such a critical juncture in the tournament. His consistent position among the ICC top ten ODI bowlers for several consecutive years speaks volumes about his caliber and skill level. Besides his prowess on the field, his vibrant personality and extensive experience will be missed profoundly.”

Late Thursday saw Jamieson’s arrival in Bengaluru, and he is slated to train with the team before the upcoming match with Pakistan.

The journey thus far has not been straightforward for the 28-year-old Jamieson. A back surgery in February, followed by being passed over in the initial selection but still maintaining a presence in India as training cover early in the tournament, has made him a testament to patience and perseverance.

Speaking about Jamieson’s readiness to step in for the Saturday match if needed, Stead remarked, “We are privileged to have an outstanding player like Kyle at our disposal. His skills and physical prowess make him a formidable threat with the ball. The added advantage of having him train with us in the first fortnight of the tournament cannot be overstated.”

Stead further noted, “Recent years have seen Kyle working relentlessly to recover from recurring back injuries. I can confidently say he’s brimming with enthusiasm about his first ODI World Cup involvement.”

Faced with two round-robin games against Pakistan and Sri Lanka, the Black Caps currently sit in fourth place on the World Cup ladder. Both upcoming matches, scheduled for Saturday and Thursday respectively, will take place in Bengaluru.
