BEST CANNED FOOD, OPTIONS, FOOD BANKS, non-perishable, nutrition, fibre, protein, low preservative, West Island Blog, Rhonda Massad

By:Nevine Elchibini

When it comes to giving non perishable food items it may be difficult to know just what the most wholesome choices available at the grocery store may be and what they have to offer.

The good news is that not only are canned foods a saviour, in some cases,  they are as highly nutritious if not more so than their fresh counterparts. For example, the protective antioxidant lycopene is augmented when tomatoes are cooked and beta carotene another potent super food is made more available in cooked pumpkins and spinach.

The following choices either pack a healthy dose of indispensable proteins, or vitamins, minerals and fibre that will offer  the most nutritional bang from each can.

IT “CAN” BE GOOD

Beans and legumes

Tomatoes

Pumpkin (unsweetened)

Spinach

Carrots

Wild salmon

Tuna in water

Sardines in olive oil

Mackerel

Crab

Chicken

Artichokes

Fruits in light syrup

Coconut milk

Chicken broth

Nutritionally speaking, low sodium versions are better and so are high fibre or protein options. The best choices have fewer ingredients with minimal preservatives. Time permitting, providing tips or recipes wrapped around the cans with an elastic can be a nice extra caring touch.

Feel good about your giving!
