me such a staple in so many of our weekend routines. With the popularity of this early afternoon meal has come many restaurants that serve their own version of brunch-fare….my favorite? Beauty’s Luncheonette. The reason why I love Beauty’s so much is that steer away from pretentious finicky brunch options like much of the new spots in the city, and focus on doing the classics…. perfectly!
Beauty’s has been around for 70 years, and they know what they are doing when it comes to food. Hymie and Freda Sckolnick opened shop in 1942, and since then the place is always packed, and the breakfast and lunch always delicious! Many think of them of the breakfast pioneers in the city, and claim they were the first to start the brunch movement in Montreal. Hymie is 94 years young and will still always greet you at the door with the biggest smile and show you to your table. That’s part of the charm at Beauty’s, a smile from Hymie, full bellies and a plethora of choices that never disappoint.
Be ready to stand in line if you pass by on the weekend, but you can usually get in quickly any other day of the week. My suggestions? Well it is hard to decide, there are a multitude of choices that are suitable for just about any craving. I think that it is hard to resist the Mish-Mash (omelet with hot-dogs, salami, green peppers and fried onions) when you visit, it is one of their most popular dishes on the menu…. with great merit. Other crowd favorites are their baked mac and cheese, fluffy pancake stack and their bagel with lox! Their Beauty Soup is very popular, so much so that if your belly is too full to try it at lunch, they sell it to bring home! What a treat! It is to be noted that they have the best milkshakes you will ever taste in the city, as well as cocktails if you prefer your brunch to be boozy.
No matter what you choose, the experience is like no other, every visit at Beauty’s is better than the last and makes me impatient for the next one!
