In a remarkable trend, Australia has sustained a 29-month streak of monthly additions to its Bitcoin ATM network. As of now, the nation boasts 1,359 Bitcoin ATMs, accounting for approximately 3.5% of the global total, with the potential to surpass Europe’s tally of 1,660 machines. This steady growth places Australia in third place globally for the highest number of Bitcoin ATMs, following the United States and Canada.

According to data from Coin ATM Radar, Australia’s impressive run of consistent ATM additions is nearing the European total, thus intensifying competition for the third-largest Bitcoin ATM network worldwide. The United States remains the leader, hosting a staggering 31,516 Bitcoin ATMs, which constitutes 81.3% of the global count. Meanwhile, Canada ranks second, with 3,027 ATMs amounting to 7.8% of the total market.

The dominance of North America, particularly the United States and Canada, becomes apparent as the region houses over 90% of all Bitcoin ATMs globally. Europe and Oceania each contain about 4% of the machines, while Asia is home to just 0.9%. In total, there are 38,753 Bitcoin ATMs around the world.

However, along with this growth, there has been an alarming increase in Bitcoin ATM-related scams, especially in the United States. The Federal Trade Commission revealed that fraudulent activities have led to losses exceeding $110 million in 2023, as scammers exploit the anonymity and rapid transaction capabilities of these machines. Tackling this issue, U.S. lawmakers have prompted major ATM operators to address fraud, particularly scams targeting elderly individuals.
