Auckland-Doha Flight: Experiencing the Luxury of Business Class with Qatar Airways

93

The familiar route from Auckland to Doha, often the gateway for New Zealanders seeking European adventures, engages one in a grueling flight of approximately 17 hours. The limited space might compel some to consider the merits of traveling Business Class, an experience I’ve sampled first-hand, journeying to Doha in Economy while returning in Qatar’s Airbus A350-1000’s Business Class.

For those burdened with excess luggage, Business Class serves as a boon, allowing passengers to carry two 15kg bags and 40kg of checked luggage, compared to Economy’s 7kg carry-on and 25kg of checked luggage. Unfortunately, my last-minute Business Class upgrade meant foregoing the luxury of exclusive check-in queues and complimentary access to lounges. However, these amenities could significantly sweeten the experience, especially if you’re facing a lengthy layover before your long-haul flight.

During the flight from Doha, Business Class passengers surprisingly boarded last. No matter where you’re seated, though, be prepared for a marathon of nearly 17 hours. The Economy Class offered a clean, standard 43cm-wide seat, reclining 31-32 degrees. Despite a glitchy headphone jack, basic amenities were available and operating efficiently.

The Business Class deserves its accolades and awards. The 53cm-wide seats could morph into 2m-long beds. Ample storage space, a minibar, a 17-inch television, noise-cancelling headphones, luxury amenities, and complimentary pyjamas contributed to a private haven, separated from the crowd by a privacy door.

Dining mitosis occurred when comparing classes; Economy Class received no fancy menu but Qatar offered a plethora of meal options for those with special dietary requirements. In Business Class, passengers engage in a ‘Dine-on-Demand’ experience. Here, you can order whatever you wish, throughout the flight. Served on ceramic dinnerware with steel cutlery and linen tablecloths, the meals took on a fancier appearance. Their bread baskets, prompt service, and excellent food quality scored high marks.

Still, the ultimate test of any flight, especially one spanning 17 hours, is the sleep quality. Economy Class doesn’t promise idyllic slumbers in their seating arrangements. Business Class, however, delivers an almost hotel-like experience with flat-beds, a duvet, pillows, and fresh pyjamas. Despite disturbances, this arrangement is significantly better for your back and neck.

My Business Class ticket was triple the cost of an Economy fare, but the benefits were undeniable. Despite soaring airfares, the lure of an enticing destination often makes a simple setup more palatable. However, a split journey proves a worthy compromise, proffering the extra luggage allowance for post-holiday shopping.

When it comes to fares for Auckland-Doha with Qatar Airways, Economy Class starts from NZ$4188, while Business Class begins at NZ$13,251.
