Forty-year-old Matthew Dane Porter, a resident of Ohsweken, is under arrest after barricading himself within a property in Six Nations of the Grand River, culminating in an alleged shootout with the authorities. Porter has been indicted on two counts of attempted murder, amongst thirteen additional criminal charges.
Police state that Porter was apprehended on Wednesday following a gunfire exchange in which he suffered multiple wounds. This incident is presently under scrutiny by the Special Investigations Unit.
On Wednesday morning, OPP Sgt. Ed Sanchuk shared on social media that law enforcement initially arrived at the Chiefswood Road residence around 11:30 p.m. the previous night. He noted that due to the aforementioned residence coming under “weapons fire”, additional support was sought from various OPP units, as well as the York Regional Police Aviation Services.
Sgt. Sanchuk stated, “A barricaded individual continued to discharge a firearm at police officers overnight.” Consequently, locals were urged to remain inside their homes.
Eventually, as morning dawned, officers made their move, breaching the front entrance of the property. The tense standoff climaxed in a gunfire exchange, with Porter receiving multiple wounds, according to a release by the SIU. Post-apprehension, Porter was rushed to a nearby hospital, with his injuries yet to be disclosed.
The charges levelled against Porter include two counts of attempted murder armed with a firearm, performing a criminal act with a firearm, careless use and possession of a firearm, firearm regulations violations, unlawful possession and knowledge of possession of a firearm, as well as three counts of possessing a weapon for dangerous purposes, and threats causing death of bodily harm.
Porter is to be produced at the Brantford courthouse this coming Friday. No casualties amongst the police personnel were reported in the incident.
