Having recently embarked on his journey with Adelaide United, English midfielder Ryan Tunnicliffe has already recognized a central tenet of the team’s ethos – a shared animosity against Melbourne Victory. Set against the backdrop of the A-League’s incepted rivalry, the spotlight now falls on the gripping encounter this Saturday night, as Melbourne Victory prepared to host the Reds at AAMI Park.
As both teams enter the season’s second round, each can pride itself on an unblemished record – scoring six points from two games, heightening the stakes and adding an electric thrill to the impending clash.
Tunnicliffe, hot off his time with 10 English clubs, which notably includes Manchester United, found his footing with the Reds just this September, “I’ve endeavored to assimilate the club’s ethos, despite the brief stint,” he remarked.
Understanding the fervor of the rivalry, he conveyed, “we share a collective resolve to triumph sunken in this game, a gesture for our devoted fans and the club that has warmly taken me in.”
The 30-year-old calls the A-League a new test, forged by the expectations set by Adelaide’s coach Carl Veart, “For the first time in my career, I have a manager who is clear about his goal – ‘A league-win this year’,” he said.
Playing alongside a younger set has been rejuvenating for Tunnicliffe, “Their vibrant energy inspires me to continually improve and contribute my maximum potential.”
One such aspirant is 17-year-old Nestory Irankunda, who displayed his prowess through a stunning free kick resulting in the Reds’ 6-0 thrashing of Melbourne City at Coopers Stadium. Regarding the young prodigy, Tunnicliffe praised, “With his arsenal of athleticism and intrinsic ability, I truly believe he could grow into a top-tier player, provided he maintains the balance between taking guidance and keeping himself grounded.”
Tunnicliffe, who was instrumental in the match against City, eagerly anticipates his starting role, building up his fitness for the imminent responsibilities, “I am rearing to utilize the 90 minutes assuredly when it comes, knowing well that I am getting fitter and stronger each day.”
