At the June 5th, 2017 borough council meeting in Pierrefonds-Roxboro, Mayor Dimitrios (Jim) Beis tabled a motion to set up a Youth Council.
Modelled after the Conseil jeunesse de Montréal that was created in 2012, the new Youth Council aims at ensuring that youth concerns are taken into account in the decisions of the City’s administration.
“The decisions that we make as an administration certainly have an impact on present-day generations; however, the impact on future generations is very important as well. I therefore consider it a priority to provide young people with an opportunity to have their voice heard, to make their concerns known, as they represent our future. It is our duty to involve them here and now, to reach out to them to increase their confidence in democratic institutions and to motivate them to actively take part in life in their community,” stated Dimitrios (Jim) Beis, Borough Mayor and member of Ville de Montréal’s Executive Committee, in charge of procurement, sports and recreations and communities of diverse origins.
The creation of the Youth Council of Pierrefonds-Roxboro stems from Montréal’s 2013-2017 youth strategy (Stratégie jeunesse montréalaise 2013- 2017) whose vision is the consolidation of engaged young people who are properly trained, physically and culturally active, totally fulfilled and recognized in their living environment.
The Council, which has been mandated to the Department of Culture, Sports, Leisure and Development aims to be up and running by the end of the year.
